Honey harvest

August was a busy time for harvesting honey. Our bees provided us with many kilos of their wonderful honey. I am posting this for October because this was the month we finally jarred all the honey and I want to share the process.
What I have learnt over the last year, is that bees are magnificent creatures, but they require constant care. After harvesting their honey, they must be fed straight away with many litres of sugar syrup. This might seem strange as July and August are still hot months, but there are not really any flowers left at this time for the bees to start collecting and making honey again before the cold weather sets in. So they need feeding so they can restock their honey stores for the winter. This is very important to ensure your hives have enough food to survive the cold months, which, in Austria are quite a lot. Luckily, our bees are doing well. It is very interesting to see how they form a small colony in the middle centre of the hive to keep themselves warm until Spring comes.
